The battery placement is retarded but otherwise itโs a really sporty crossover and nearly luxurious. For the 2013-2019, 1.5/1.6L engines have had horrible luck with coolant issues. 2.0L have had some, but not as much. I have a 2014 2.0L AWD with 105k km on it, and itโs running perfectly.
The interior is livable but not ultra high quality by any means. Touch points feel good; it feels like aluminum on the steering wheel, shift knob and door pulls, but it might not actually be real metal. Shift feel is pretty good for a budget car, though there is some slop in the driveline many fix with a rear motor / transmission mount.
The Fiesta with a a 1.0l is ridiculously fuel efficient, like 46 mpg hwy epa and I've heard you can break 50 if you drive it right. It's a turbo and not super anemic despite the size (based on reading the car mags my own butt dyno reading on a test drive.) Focus isn't that good on gas, but it won't be what you'd call bad. Either one should be
Front end looks good up close, as too does the interior. Not a fan of full LCD dashboards in any car honestly, nor big infotainment screens. Physical needles only, or LED displays in some cases. That's why I'm fond of my 2014. Needles for rpm and speed, little led matrix display for trip, fuel and temp. Nice n simple, not cluttered.
As an owner of a Fiesta ST and an employee of Ford, a manual SE is a fine car - literally 99% of problems are related to the Auto trans (avoid those like the plague, worst transmission in the auto industry). However I would take a used Honda Fit any day over a SE Fiesta - it's just a nicer car and is more fun to drive.
The pump was under an extended Ford recall. so no cost to us. Other than normal wear and maintenance items I never had to work on the car. A 2010 would only be different in the sheetmetal, and should be a good car, but definitely get a good mechanic evaluation before buying it.

This engine used to be a fiesta option for something like $1500, but Ford dropped it. Ecosports come with 4 wheel disk brakes (fiestas come with rear drums), alloy wheels (fiesta comes with steel standard), cruise control and trailer tow package.
Currently looking at a Ford Fiesta 2016 automatic with 95,000km. It's for 5700 and my max budget is 6000$. I've heard there are sometimes issues with the automatic transmission, is there still this issue with the 2016? Is it still a good car for a first time buyer and university student? What should I be looking at when I go look at the used car?
In terms of overall reliability, a couple of bolt-ons and a good remap shouldn't impact engine reliability whatsoever but may have an impact on driveline reliability. Again, this depends largely on the driver too. A conservative map on most cars for example won't have a noticeable impact on longevity or reliability.
