After arriving at the University of Königsberg in 1849, Hermann von Helmholtz started investigating the trichromatic hypothesis of color perception proposed by Thomas Young. Four years later in 1853, he was invited to lecture to the German Society and used the opportunity to criticize harshly Johann Goethe's Theory of Color published in 1810. Some critics maintain that Goethe regarded the theory of color as centrally important to his works overall and more important even than all his poetry, such that the correspondence between Goethe and Schopenhauer on this subject constitutes a unique document of scientific-historical, biographical, psychological, and philosophical importance. 5 A whole century later, Johann Wolfgang Goethe challenged Newton’s scientific view with his ‘Theory of Colours’ (1810), based on his own observations. This was another breakthrough because he considered color to be a perceptual phenomenon and not just an objective and easily measured quality of light. 1. Imagination in Goethe’s Experimental Critique of Newton. 1 A stereotypical view of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s (1749-1832) criticisms of the method and results of Isaac Newton’s (1643-1727) theory of color might say the following. First, the poet, dedicated to the richness of life, objected to mathematical physics’ analytical In all the scientific work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe nothing is more notorious than his polemic against Isaac Newton’s theory of white light and colors. This “great error” has been a constant source of embarrassment to reverers of Goethe that seemingly can be explained only by analyzing his psyche or his poetic metaphysics. Larded with color misconceptions, color falsehoods, handwaving about "color experts" and a ripe selection of nonsense color platitudes from the likes of Johannes Itten and Johann Goethe, the most remarkable lesson in this book is that many artists simply cannot accept that 18th century "color theory" is completely useless and must be discarded.
